Burn survivors face numerous challenges not only related to physical recovery but also significant psychosocial difficulties. The trauma of burn injuries can lead to long-term psychological effects such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and body image issues (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). In Adamawa State, burn injuries are common due to factors such as domestic accidents, fires, and inadequate safety measures, but the psychosocial aspects of burn recovery are often overlooked in medical care (Ali et al., 2024). Burn survivors, particularly those who suffer severe burns, often experience stigmatization, social isolation, and difficulties in reintegrating into their communities and families.
Psychosocial support is critical for the comprehensive care of burn survivors, encompassing mental health counseling, peer support, and community reintegration programs (Olaniyan & Adebayo, 2023). The healthcare facilities in Adamawa State, while providing medical treatment for burn injuries, may not offer adequate psychosocial support to help patients navigate the emotional and social challenges they face post-injury. This study aims to evaluate the psychosocial challenges faced by burn survivors in Adamawa State hospitals and explore how healthcare providers can address these challenges to improve the overall recovery process.
The physical management of burn injuries is often prioritized over the psychosocial needs of burn survivors in Adamawa State hospitals. Many survivors are left to cope with the emotional and social ramifications of their injuries, which can hinder their full recovery and reintegration into society. Despite the well-documented importance of psychosocial support in burn care, there is limited research on the psychosocial challenges faced by burn survivors in Adamawa State. This study seeks to evaluate the psychosocial challenges faced by burn survivors in Adamawa State hospitals and to explore potential interventions that could enhance their psychosocial recovery.
This study will focus on burn survivors in Adamawa State hospitals, with an emphasis on the psychosocial challenges they face during the recovery process. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from burn survivors and the variability of psychosocial support available in different hospitals within Adamawa State.
